An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Military Uniforms of the 19th Century An expert guide to the American Civil War, the Boer War, the Wars of German and Italian Unification and the Colonial Wars Digby Smith & Kevin F. Kiley, with consultant Jeremy Black MBE • A comprehensive illustrated directory of the uniforms of the 19th century, containing over 500 images of clothing, weapons, insignia and kit • Contains an unprecedented wealth of illustrative detail, with colour artworks of uniforms, battle scenes, technical drawings and campaign details, together with contemporaneous colour plates and fine art paintings • A definitive analysis of the weapons, equipment, deployment, tactics and motivation of these national forces, as well as fascinating detail of day-to-day life for the soldiers that fought the battles • A stunningly presented and unrivalled source of information on the insignia, appearance and experience of the fighting men of the period The uniforms from the 19th century are some of the most colourful and varied in the history of uniformology. In this book there are artworks of familiar Austrian hussars, Prussian dragoons, French chasseurs, American continentals and British grenadiers, but also Boer farmers, Zulu, Apache and Souix warriors, Boxers from the Chinese rebellion, and rebel Sepoys from the Great Indian mutiny. As well as illustrations of the uniforms, equipment and kit, the expert text examines the organization, tactics and experience of the men-at-arms of these pivotal times, where a century of war saw the beginning of a new era. This volume presents not only a unique visual directory of uniforms, but an evocative portrait of the political, military and social contexts of the soldiers of the time. About the Authors Digby Smith joined the British Army in 1951, and in 1961 was commissioned into the Royal Corps of Signals, spending over 10 years in Germany. He has written over 50 books on various aspects of military history, from 1792 to 1815. Kevin F. Kiley is a West Point graduate and a retired US Marine Corps artillery officer. He is the author of books on the artillery of the Napoleonic Wars, and of Napoleon's generals and their battles, as well as contributing chapters in Cold War Hot and Dixie Victorious, both edited by Peter Tsouras.
